You may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one.
Giving to THS More about giving to THS Imagine a school where children are known for their strengths, rather than set aside for their weaknesses. Where advanced academic content is presented to all children, but adjusted for those who may access it in different ways. Where children are valued as individuals, rather than being programmed as part of a crowd. Where teachers are learners and learners teach, all in active exploration of a topic. Where the outside world is part of the curriculum, to be included as part of study. Where children compete to be friendly and helpful, instead of gaining status in other ways. The Harbour School really is such a place. About half of our children would be leaders in any school, but prefer ours because of its curriculum, small classes and customized education. But we also include many children who are shy, or bouncy, or a little eccentric, who would not fare well in a large class with one teacher and many students. These problems disappear in small classes. Many have specific learning difficulties, and would be likely to feel inferior or to be left behind in a large school. These difficulties can be individually addressed in a small setting. Many are academically gifted, and would be bored by the slow pace and content of a large class. They are encouraged to proceed at their own pace. Our inclusion of these children is not done because we have to and is not approached with reluctance. We value all of our children because of the gifts they bring to our school and the overall advantage that it gives them to understand their own and others’ areas of strength and weakness. Our continued ability to provide the small classes in which these children thrive is dependent upon the continued support of our donors and benefactors, others who believe in inclusive and customized education. Because we are a small school, each donation directly impacts the lives of our children and also helps further our goal of becoming a full primary school with two classes per year group. Our school is unique in Asia. Our inclusive approach, our individualized instruction, and our school facility will serve as a model for other schools and for educators throughout the region. Your gift will help to change the life of one child, the futures of many children, the approach to education in our city, and perhaps even the shape of our society. |
